What should your website have?

No one has the last word about what a website should have, but the experience has given us some tips that we want to share:

1. Simple Design
Less is more! A simple clear design with colors that allow good contrasts between texts and backgrounds, will make your website read more easily. Avoid using background photos, unknown letter fonts, and heavy files.

2. Clear navigation
Make it easy for your visitors to navigate, with clear links to pages with the content they expect to find there. Keep links to pages that truly have the content corresponding to the title.

Use text links or buttons that look like buttons. Avoid where possible to create links from images, where each part of the image leads to a different part of the website.

Do not try to invent the wheel, use the navigation conventions that everyone drives. Do not put your visitors to scratch their head looking for where you can see the other pages of your website.

3. Light files
Use lightweight files and excessive animations, especially if they are in Flash. Remember that Flash does not work on iPads or iPhones, and there are millions of users who will not be able to see your website.

Compress the photos as much as possible and ensure that the entire website is not cumbersome. Remember that now there are many people who are going to get to your site from a Smartphone and do not want to wait.

4. Ease of Contact
Let people reach your page once you find on each screen, your phone, your address, the city where you are located, your email. Make contact with you easy. Especially specifying the country where you are. Thousands of websites in Latin America do not specify the country where they are and this disorients those who find it.

Also have a contact form, email addresses and any other tool such as a chat, Twitter or Facebook account that allows easy contact.

5. Geographic Location Facility

Include an address and if you feel it necessary a map of Google Maps within your website showing its location. This will enable your visitors to be clear about where your business is. Specially the country where your business is located. It happens that in many countries of South America, business design their websited and dont incluide the country of origin.

6. News

Keep the information on your website up to date. There is nothing more disappointing for your visitors than believing to have found the information they are looking for and reach to see that that product or service no longer offer it.

7. Honesty

Offer your products and services with honesty. Show clearly and truthfully what you really offer. Do not make promises or offer discounts just by catching potential customers. Remember, these strategies work like a boomerang.

8. Corporate Vs. Personal

Maintain the professional corporate atmosphere of your site. Avoid using it to put personal photos of events that are not directly related to your business.

9. Avoid Stereotypes

Yes, there is some text on your website, such as "we have a highly trained team", you and the person who wrote the page have fallen into a very common cliche. Equally if you think that the mission and the vision of the company should be there, think about whether this information so obvious and so used does not bring anything new or interesting to a visitor since everyone uses the same without meaning.

10. Compatibility
Test your website in various browsers, Windows Explorer, Safari, Google Chrome and Mozilla, until it looks the same everywhere. Remember that everyone has their way and way of surfing the internet.

11. Meta Tags

Have the Meta Tags in place, along with the description of the page that collects Google, Yahoo, Bing and the other search engines. The search engines do not see their design, nor their colors, nor their animations, .... just look for the code of the page. And if Meta Tags are not there it's like not having armed anything and not having a website.

12. Robots.txt

Get a robots.txt file, which tells the search engines you can and can not index your website and upload it to your server along with the page. This point is crucial if you want to be taken into account by the search engines.

13. Google Webmaster Tools

Create an account in Google Webmaster Tools, activate an account for your website, install the verification code on your website and upload the robots.txt.

14. Sitemap - Site Map

Create a sitemap of your website with extension.xml to be crawled by the search engines. Include it within the files of your site and upload it to your server.

15. Good content

Offer good content, good news, interesting data, real information of your products. Try to be clear and concise and focus on providing useful information.

14. Photos and Images
